There was also a hallway dedicated to corn(?) Confusing, but creepy nonetheless. The Butcher Room was my favorite, and also the largest scene in the Haunt. Most of the haunt consisted of dark mazes and disorienting hallways, but the rooms that broke them up were well decorated and the actors in good quality costumes and makeup for the budget. There wasn't much of any central theme to Chebanse, more like a chaotic string of scary scenes thrown at each other one after another, not unlike flipping channels on the TV. Be wary of what I'm going to call The Toilet Paper rooms if you're sensitive to strobes. Beyond that is several winding hallways of darkness where very devoted actors creep and scream and follow your every move. Further up the stairs, the haunt begins with a cryptic desk clerk for what one can assume is either a creepy hotel or haunted funeral home. ![]() From the spooky piano player and projected phantasms, you travel up the stairs where a volunteer shows you the rules and makes sure you read them. The haunt itself is located on the upper floors of the Civic Center, so be advised this is not a wheelchair accessible event. Not that it's a bad thing I was certainly impressed both times. A few things changed from last season, but the haunt carried over several themes I recognized from last year. This happened to be my second visit to Chebanse, the first being my review of last year's haunt. Other than the two stopping points, groups are allowed to move at their own pace, which only slowed due to blind mazes or misshapen walkways, intended to disorient. I don't believe there were more than two groups inside the haunt at any point. Groups no bigger than four were let into the haunt at a time. There were no staging areas within the haunt itself, though there were two different points where forward movement is deliberately halted, though for less than a minute both times. Quality and/or entertainment value of an event are not factors in this calculation. Higher numbers represent more value per dollar. Thankfully on these cold October nights, the line for Chebanse is inside the Civic Center gym, which is spacious, well lit, and has access to indoor bathrooms and a snack table selling concessions for the center charity, Gigi's House. Parking is along the surrounding streets. The building is not far from the main drag through the tiny town, and is colorfully lit with easy to see signs. It's not hard to find if you've never been. The Chebanse Civic Center hosts the annual haunted house, which is a stately old municipal building well over a hundred years old, and well known to everyone who lives in the area. ![]()
